SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Thirty-four wounded military members enjoyed a day of fishing, fellowship and food at Choke Canyon, Oct. 15, courtesy of the Quality Bass Club.
Now in its eighth year, Fishing For Freedom is a way for the club to show its appreciation for the warriors’ service to the nation.
“Anything we can do for these service members, we should do,” said Cal Bienhoff, event coordinator for the Texas B.A.S.S. Federation Nation club.
“It’s devastating what some of these guys have been through,” he continued. “It’s hard for some of them just to get out of bed. But doing something like this is a part of the healing process. They just need a break.”
Club members were assisted by volunteers from Valero, who helped onshore with food and refreshments. Additionally, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and the Non-Commissioned Officers Association National Defense Foundation served as sponsors for the event that honored service members from the Brooke Army Medical Center and their families.
Following a day of bass fishing, the wounded warriors enjoyed Texas-style barbecue, received gifts, and were recognized for their catches.
The top three anglers were Ian Stauffer with 6.22 pounds, David Dean with 4.43, and Mark Couter with 3.42.
