Farmington, N.M. — The Four Corners Bassmasters club has been supporting youth baseball for three decades by hosting the E.H. Queen Memorial Bass Tournament.
The New Mexico B.A.S.S. Nation club has hosted the annual benefit tournament in honor of E.H. Queen, an avid bass angler and strong supporter of local youth baseball, according to club member Billy Dunson who has served as the tournament’s coordinator. Farmington is a hotbed for youth baseball and has been the host of the Connie Mack World Series since 1965. Connie Mack World Series teams are comprised of highly-talented players ages 16 to 18 from across the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.
The 30th Annual E.H. Queen Memorial Bass Tournament was held May 20-21 at Navajo Dam Lake. This year’s tournament drew 49 boats and raised $2,000 which was given to four local youth baseball teams. “We support two to four teams a year,” Dunson said. He estimated the tournament collects from $2,000 to $4,000 a year for local youth baseball.
When E.H. Queen died in 1988 the Four Corners Bassmasters decided to make their Morgan Lake winter tournament a memorial to the local backhoe construction and carwash businesses owner. Dunson eventually moved the tournament from Morgan Lake, a small power plant lake, to the larger Navajo Dam Lake to draw more boats.
