Salem, Ore. — Alan Olsen (R-Canby), an avid fisherman and past president of the Oregon B.A.S.S. Federation, has been elected to the Oregon State Senate to represent Senate District 20. He will immediately be putting his natural resources and sports fisherman expertise to use on the Senate Environment and Natural Resources Committee, where he has been appointed as Vice Chair.
"I love this state for many reasons, but close to the top of my list are its clear streams and legendary fish," said Olsen. "For much of my adult life I have enjoyed Oregon's clean water and strong fish populations. I now have the chance to make policy that will protect these resources. Hopefully we can secure and improve the quality of our rivers and fish and as a result improve the sport and economy of angling."
Olsen, a tournament bass angler, served as president of the Oregon B.A.S.S. Federation from 1984 to 1985 and again from 1995 to 1996. The Oregon B.A.S.S. Federation works to preserve fish habitat, educate and unite anglers, and organize fishing tournaments around the state. As Vice-Chair of the Senate Environment and Natural Resources Committee, Olsen will work to balance the needs of Oregon's recreationists and small businesses dependent on the state's abundant resources while protecting clean air and water. Olsen will also work to increase fish populations through improved hatchery practices and protecting spawning grounds.
Olsen and his wife Juanita make their home in Canby. Olsen is a veteran of the United States Army, serving from 1969 to 1971. He is a general contractor and small business owner building homes and structures across Oregon. Senate District 20 includes Canby, Oregon City and rural parts of Clackamas County.
